Tuesday, Sept. 24. William Barnes II marries Elmeta Bailey a widow with several
children , they were listed on the 1880 census but what became of William after
that is not known. Since Elmeta was listed as the head of the household,
William probably was physically or mentally disabled at the time. Incredibly,
his grandson, Russell Barnes, said the family did not know what happened to
him. Another grandchild, Gessie Barnes, confirmed Russell's statement but
remembered family conversations about his moving to Tennessee. William's
children may have been upset over his last marriage , or he may have moved out
of state. Whatever the reason, his family lost contact with him and his final
resting place is not known.

Wednesday, March 30. Wallace Barnes marries Liddia Clara Brandenburg in Mt.
Springs KY
Wallace Barnes and Clara Brandenburg were united in holy matrimony at the home
of James H Brandenburg, father of the bride. Wallace and Clara raised three
boys and three girls: Charley, Carrie, Bessie, Russell, Hood and Gessie. The
family originally lived near the Old Furnace. After oil was discovered on their
property around 1916 they moved to Millers Creek and bought river bot-tom farms
that were more in keeping with their recently gained wealth. The children of
Wallace and Clara all reached maturity and, except for Russell, raised families
of their own. Carrie married Charles Estes in 1906 and had a large family.
Charles was killed by a train on the bridge at the mouth of Cow Creek while he
and his son Bee were walking on the railroad during a blinding rainstorm.
Carrie died on August 9, 1931. Bessie married Atch Howell and raised a family
before she expired on June 30, 1959. Russell married Alice Lane and served as
the postmaster at Pryse for a time. He and Alice died within a short time of
each other in 1959. Hood married Flora Hamilton and operated a retail store at
the Millers Creek crossing for many years. Hood and Flora had five children,
one died tragically while still a youth and four reached maturity. Gessie
married Arnold Young in 1933 and after his premature death married a Mr.
Chaviesse and they operated a restaurant in Winchester, Kentucky. Gessie and
Arnald young had six children. Gessie died in Fayette county on April 11, 1974.
Clara lived until February 26, 1932. Wallace and Clara are buried in the Barnes
Cemetery. Several other members of their family are also buried there. The plot
is on state road 1571, approximately 2 1/2 miles east of the mouth of Cow
Creek, on the north side of a railroad underpass, atop the hill that overlooks
the old homeplace.

Brandenburg. Charley, the oldest of the siblings, was born near Roslyn in
Estill County. By all accounts he was a decent and generous person who was
mod-est to a fault. At one time he ran a general store across from the Old
Furnace but spent most of his life as a farmer. Charley did not marry until he
was nearly thirty and when he did it was to Ada billings Johnson a young widow
with three small children.

Estill county. He married Myrtle McKnight and they had three sons and a
daughter. After Myrtle died Earl married Lily Newkirk Thacker a widowed school
teacher. He died tragically in 1959 when a political feud with Page Mason, the
Ravenna Chief of Police, erupted into a gun battle that left both men dead. He
was a veteran of World War II and is buried in the West Irvine cem.

Friday, Jan. 14. Virginia Barnes is born to Hood Barnes and Flora Hamilton in
Estill County Virginia was a teacher and a school administrator. She married
Robert "Bob" Walker a well-known civic leader in Estill County. Bob
was gunned down in the line of duty while serving as the Chief of Police in
Irvine. He is buried in the Barnes cemetery at Millers Creek. They had no
children of their own, but both spent a good deal of their lives teaching and
working with the children of the community at large.

AGED CITIZEN DIES
Estill Herald April 9, 1929
Mr. Wallace Barnes aged 70, died at his home on Millers Creek Monday morning
about four o'clock, from infirmities of old age. Mr. Barnes was one of Estill
County's most prominent citizens. Early in life he bought a large tract of land
on Millers Creek when land was cheap and held it until it became ore valuable
and oil was found on the land and his royalties amounted to a consid-erable
sum. He was a farmer and a progressive citizen. A few weeks before his death he
united with the Christian Church at Millers Creek and was baptized. He was
generous and kindly and always ready to assist a friend and was one of the
communities most loved citizens. He is survived by three sons: Charley Barnes
of Ravenna, Russell Barnes of Pryse, Hood Barnes of Millers Creek and three
daughters Mrs. Atch Howell of Fitchburg, Mrs. Charles Estes of Ravenna and Mrs.
Arnold Young of Millers Creek. We have not learned of funeral arrange-ments but
understand that he will be buried in the home cemetery at Millers Creek.
Note : There were several errors in the obituary. Wallace was baptized only a
day or so before he died . He discovered oil on his farm near Fitchburg and not
on his Millers Creek property. He bought the land at Millers Creek dur-ing
World War I when land was bringing the highest prices ever.

Sunday, Nov. 30. Charles B Estes is killed at 47 on the Cow Creek R R bridge.
Charles and his son Bee were walking on the tracks over the bridge across Cow
Creek in a blinding rainstorm. Bee was in the lead holding a lantern in front
of him when the lantern struck an oncoming train , giving Bee a split second
warning that allowed him enough time to jump out of the way. Charles never saw
nor heard the train and was killed. The L&N Railroad awarded the family the
generous sum of $300 for the loss of their father.

March 7. Ralph Barnes marries Mertie B Horn. Their children included: Ralph L,
Ronald and Joyce Caroll. When Ralph Barnes married Mertie B Horn, he united the
Barnes clan with one of the oldest families in the state. The patriarch of the
Horn family was Johan Krofft Horn who immigrated from Germany to America in
1715. After homesteading in Pennsylvania and Maryland the family moved to the
western end of Virginia the same year that Daniel Boone founded Boonesborough.
In 1778 they came to Kentucky to defend Boonesborough against Indian attacks.
The Horns and their brother-in-law Joseph Proctor, the famous Indian fighter
and Methodist preacher, were in Boonesborough during the great siege of 1778.
Aaron Horn, the head of the family, died at Boonesborough but his children were
among the first white people to settle in what is now Estill County. Mertie B was
the daughter of Simp-son Merle Horn and Mary Elizabeth Fike, also the
descendant of German pioneers. Simpson's father was John Jackson Horn and his
mother was Rebecca Horn, daughter of Woodson Horn and Mary Jane Sparks. Mary
Elizabeth's parents were Joseph Fike and Lucinda Burns and her grandparents
were Leopold Fike and Cynthia Ward.

serving with the with the Army in Berlin and graduating from Eastern Kentucky
University, Ralph held management positions with the Corning Glass and Kroger
companies and later owned several restaurants and other retailing businesses in
Kentucky. In 1985 he became involved in prison reform and pioneered the concept
of building factories inside prisons to provide job training for in-mates while
generating revenues to help pay the cost for operating the penal systems in the
states of Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi and Florida.

Sunday, Feb. 16. Robert Walker, husband of Virginia Barnes, is murdered at the
age of 65 while serving as Chief of Police for Irvine. Bob was called to a
disturbance and shot from an ambush. He was well known and well liked
throughout the area and his senseless death caused an out-pouring of public
indignation. His funeral was one of the largest ever held in Estill County. He
