men-tions the mansion where the family lived. The term may have been a generic

well-to-do. If the family did have money at one time, it never got down to Sam.

James Brown marries Elizabeth Robins. James was an elderly man and was listed
as Elizabeth's guardian. The marriage must have been for convenience since she
was only fifteen and some fifty years younger than him. He died within a few
years leaving her a very young widow. She married again soon after to another
older man who also died with in a short time.

Thomas Riffett joins the Confederate army and involved in a skirmish in
Montgomery county where a union soldier was killed and had to flee for his
life. He joins the Union Army to escape from the Yankees but is soon discovered
and arrested.

I send you enclosed order of Col. K Dent 34th Ky Volunteers Louisville Ky. This
Thos. Riffitt alluded to in Col. Dent's order was arrested by the civil
authorities of Montgomery Co. Ky. charged with being concerned in the mur-der
of one Patterson Pointer a Union man who was murdered by a party of rebels in
the county on Sept last. Reffitt is charged with being with the rebels when the
murder was committed. He was captured about a month ago by some of my command
and sent off with other prisoners. It seems that he was released at Louisville
and enlisted in Col. Dent's regiment and was by the Col.'s order sent here. I
wish instructions relative to the course I shall pursue in the case.

by the military authorities to stand trial for murder. The kangaroo court,
dominated by a jury of Yankees sentences him to three years in the Kentucky
State Prison in Frankfort.

Thomas Riffet mysteriously dies while serving a prison sentence for rebel
activities during the Civil War. He probably was killed after escaping and was
dumped on the porch of his house in Montgomery county on Christmas morning

Tues, Apr 13. Lou Ada Billings, matriarch of the Johnson-Barnes family is born
to J. Samuel (Reffitt) Billings and Ardenia Hendrix
The central figure in the Barnes-Johnson members of the Billings family was Lou
Ada "Mammy" Billings and it is only because of her that this family
history can be written. She was the glue that held the family together during
the difficult periods when weaker indi-viduals would have thrown in the towel.
Ada was a product of that tough pioneer stock that transformed the North
American wilderness into the greatest nation on Earth. She understood and
accepted adversity as part of life and knew how to deal with trage-dies and
hard times without losing her perspective. She was twice wid-owed while still
in the her prime, buried two children and spent much of her life under the
constant strain of financial difficulties. But she got up every day and faced
the world with vigor and re-solve and simply refused to accept defeat.
The Johnson chapter of the family history began when Ada married Byrd N.
Johnson from Montgomery County. The patriarch of the Johnson clan that produced
Byrd probably was the Moses Johnson who came to Kentucky from Tennessee during
the first half of the nineteenth century. Isaac Johnson, Byrd's grandfather,
was born in Tennessee around 1818 and came with his family to the Bluegrass
state where he married Malinda Neal in 1842. Malinda bore three sons: James
(1803), Gideon (1846) and George W. (1847). She died during or shortly after
G.W. was born and Isaac, des-perately in need of a mother for his three young
sons, married Sarah Jane Henry who produced four more sons: Moses (1850),
Abraham (1853), Isaac (1855) and John (1857). When the eldest son James H
reached marry-ing age he tied the knot with Sarah E. Watson on December 7,
1869. Sarah was the daughter of Isaac T. Watson and Elizabeth Rogers who also
were from Tennessee. Sarah's maternal grandparents were Wil-liam Rogers and
Abigail Larrison, daughter of George Larrison. James and Sarah raised seven
children: William (1867), Isabelle (1870), Andrew J. (1872), Mar-gret (1874),
Byrd N. (1876), Lizzy (1878) and Millie (1879). Byrd would eventually grow up
and meet a pretty lass from Powell County named Lou Ada Billings. They said
their vows at the Billings home on the seventh day of June in the first year of
the twentieth century. Sam Billings placed his mark on the mar-riage
certifi-cate and the marriage that would soon end with the early death of Byrd,
be-came official. Even though the union between Byrd and Ada lasted but a few
years it was a significant event in the history of the family. Three quality
hu-man beings were created from that marriage who were a source of strength and
stabil-ity during the troublesome times that challenged the family and the
nation during much of their adult lives. It was their gen-eration that fought
two world wars and suffered through the greatest eco-nomic depression of modern
times. The children born to Byrd and Ada were: Lillian (1903), Cora (1904), and
Newton (1907). After Byrd's death in 1907, Ada and her children moved in with
her widowed mother and remained there until she remarried in 1910.
While the young widow was living with her mother she eventually began to see a
twenty-eight year old grocer named Charley Barnes . Their relationship soon
developed into a serious affair that resulted in a trip to the altar on
Oc-tober 10, 1910. Since Ada's father had died in 1904, her brother Burke
signed the marriage certificate and the Johnson and Barnes families were
united. Ada and Charley would add three more members to the family : Ethel (1911),
Earl (1914) and Ralph (1916). Ada's children were all destined to marry and
raise families of their own . Lillian, while still a teenager, met and married
a neighbor boy, Robert Arthur. Bob's parents were James Ar-thur and Nannie
Brandenburg, the daughter of James and Amelia Branden-burg. The Brandenburgs
were also the grandparents of Charley Barnes, creating an unusual situation
where Bob and his father-in-law had the same grandpa. Cora became the third
wife of Robert Clowers, a railroader, who was noted for his humor. Newton, the
youngest of Byrd's children, married a Cob Hill girl named Mildred Maloney on
August 8, 1931, daughter of Green Maloney and Nora Fletcher. Although Byrd was
a member of the family for only a brief period, his legacy to the clan was
considerable and he deserves to be remem-bered. He is buried in the Billings
Cemetery behind the Old Furnace .
The Barnes half of the clan soon followed in their older siblings footsteps and
took spouses of their own. Ethel married Dudley Fielder, the son of James and
Cynthia Tipton. Earl married another Cob Hill girl, Myrtle McKnight, daughter
of Edward and Lula Howell Mcknight. Ralph married Mertie B Horn, daughter of
Simp-son M Horn and Mary Elizabeth Fike of Old Landing. Earl and Ralph had second
wives late in life but no children were born of those unions. Ada and Charley
lived near Fitchburg in the early years of their marriage but later moved to
Millers Creek when their finan-cial situation improved. Charley's farm was
located about two miles east of the mouth of Cow Creek on the Kentucky River.
The Barnes house was across the railroad tracks at the base of Mount Scratchum
facing where the American Legion building now stands. After oil was discovered
on family property Ada must have thought that the bad luck that had dogged her
all of her life was fi-nally changing , but that was not to be. Charley died
prematurely from a rup-tured appendix in 1933. The Great Depression seri-ously
eroded Ada's estate and the oil played out. In addition, her two youngest sons
were given to a wild and irresponsible lifestyle and Ada was called upon to
help sup-port their families. Eventually her financial resources, like the oil,
were no more and she died as she was born -- without material wealth. Ada's
children and grand-children sustained her during her final years. She must have
been very pleased with how they turned out. In spite of her difficult life, or
perhaps be-cause of it, Lou Ada "Mammy" Billings Johnson Barnes lived
ninety-six years before exiting this earth on May 7, 1976. Her descendants
should pause every April thirteenth to remember this remarkable woman because
without her courage, determination and resourcefulness none of us would be
here.

Springs KY. After Ada's first husband Bird Johnson died unexpectedly, she and
her three young children moved in with her mother near the Old Furnace section
of Estill county. While Ada was living with her mother she eventually began to
see a twenty-eight year old bachelor named Charley Barnes. Their relationship
soon developed into a serious affair that resulted in a trip to the altar.

children, married a Cob Hill girl named Mildred Maloney on August 8, 1931,
daughter of Green Maloney and Nora Fletcher. Although Byrd was a member of the
family for only a brief period, his legacy to the clan was considerable and he
deserves to be remembered. He is buried in the Billings Cemetery behind the Old
Furnace.
The Barnes half of the clan soon followed in their older siblings footsteps and
took spouses of their own. Ethel married Dudley Fielder, the son of James and
Cynthia Fielder from Madison County. Earl married another Cob Hill girl, Myrtle
McKnight, daughter of Edward and Lula Howell. Ralph married Mertie B Horn,
daughter of Simpson M and Mary Elizabeth Horn of Old Landing. Earl and Ralph
had second wives late in life but no children were born of those unions. Ada
and Charley lived near Fitchburg in the early years of their marriage but later
moved to Millers Creek when their financial situation improved. Charlie’s farm
was located about two miles east of the mouth of Cow Creek on the Kentucky
River. The Barnes house was across the railroad tracks at the base of Mount
Scratchum facing where the American Legion building now stands. After oil was
discovered on family property Ada must have thought that the bad luck that had
dogged her all of her life was finally changing, but that was not to be.
Charley died prematurely from a rup-tured appendix in 1933. The Great
Depression seri-ously eroded Ada's estate and the oil played out. In addition,
her two youngest sons were given to a wild and irresponsible lifestyle and Ada
was called upon to help support their families. Eventually her financial
resources, like the oil, were no more and she died as she was born -- without
material wealth. Ada's children and grandchildren sustained her during her
final years and she must have been very pleased with how they turned out. In
spite of her difficult life, or perhaps be-cause of it, Lou Ada
"Mammy" Billings Johnson Barnes lived ninety-six years before exiting
this earth on May 7,1976. Her descendants should pause every April thirteenth
to remember this remarkable woman because without her courage, de-termination
and resourcefulness her descendants would not exist today.

December 12, 1926 Elmer Billings, the sixteen year old son of Otis and Suda
Nolan Billings, had attended church with his girl friend on Cobb Hill. After
church he was walking her home, as was the custom in those days, when an unseen
assailant shot him from ambush. According to witnesses he had stopped to light
a cigarette when he was fatally wounded. Speculation had it that he was killed
by moonshiners because they believed that he had given information to the
authorities. But a transcript of the inquest seems to implicate a jealous
boyfriend of the girl. Nobody was ever convicted for the murder of Elmer
Billings.
