The Fike family that settled in Lee and Estill counties evolved from the Fike,
Ward, Barrett, Burns and Angel familes that were among the early pioneer
families that settled Kentucky. Leapold Fike, the progenitor of all Estill and
Lee county Fikes, came to America from Bavaria, an area that now is a part of
Germany. He probably immigrated to America during the first quarter of the
nineteenth century while still a youth. At some point he married Cinthia Ward
and they ended up in eastern Kentucky. Leapold may have lived in West Virginia
before settling in Kentucky but there is no irrefutable evidence to support
that assumption. There are several Fike families that settled in West Virginia,
many of whom were Quakers. Although many hours have been spent researching
Leapold, very little has been found to identify his ancestors or where he lived
prior to coming to Kentucky. Cinthia Ward is believed to have been born in
Kentucky but little also is known about her ancestry. Leapold and Cinthia
probably died and were buried in what is now Lee county but the actual dates of
their deaths and their burial sites are not known. Many of the descendants of
Leapold and Cinthia still live in Estill and Lee counties. The following is a
chronological history of some members of the Fike family and their relatives.
This is only a partial listing and much research remains to be done before a
complete history of the family can be written. The Fikes are noted for their
creative talents and hard work.

William Burns I, patriarch of the Burns family in eastern Kentucky and
grandfather of Lucinda Burns, is born in Virginia. He was a veteran of the
Revolutionary War (pension (#16669) and settled in Clay county where he owned
1000 acres of land. At that time Clay was a very large county that included all
or part of the present counties of Breathitt, Jackson, Laurel, Owsley, Perry,
Estill, Laurel and Lee. If the birthplace was listed as Clay county, the actual
sight of the birth could be in any of those coun-ties. As the counties were
formed out of Clay, the new county was listed as the place of the residence
when in reality the homesite had not changed.

Joe Fike ,age 84, died at his home May 26 due to infirmaties of old Age. Mr
Fike was a farmer and leading citizen of his neighborhood. He is survived by
his wife (nee Lu-cinda Burns) and seven children : Lee Fike of Evelyn, John
Will Fike of Old Landing, James Fike of Ravenna, and Grover Fike of Millers
Creek; three daughters Mrs Simp Horn of Old Landing, Mrs Ray Goosey and Miss Eunice

Mrs Mary Fike Horn, 70, died at 2:15 pm
Saturday at the Patti A Clay infirmary in Richmond. She died of burns received
when her clothing caught fire from a grate at her home Saturday morning at Old
Landing.
Surviving are her husband Simp M Horn; five daughters ; Alpha Flannery of
Medway, Ohio; Mrs Colonza Cain of South Vienna; Ohio, Mrs Mertie Barnes of
Ravenna; Mrs Thelma Moles of Fairborne, Ohio and Mrs Bulah Drake of Hamilton,
Ohio; four sons Buell Horn of Old Landing; Arnold horn and Elmo Horn both of
Dayton, Ohio; two sisters; Mrs Alpha Goosey and Mrs Eunice Griffen both of
Evelyn; two brothers; Lee Fike of South Irvine and Grover Fike of Shade, Ky; 29
grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Services will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday at the Ravenna Nazarene Church
by Reverand Howard Lobb. Burial will be in the West Irvine Cemetery. The body
was re-moved today from the Cox Funeral Home to the residence of Ralph Barnes
in Ravenna.

MARRIES THE OLDEST THEN THE YOUNGEST (Estill

Simpson Horn, one of the respected citizens of the Old Landing section,
holds the distinction of being married to the oldest and youngest daughter of
the late Mr and Mrs Joe Fike.
The first wedding was to Mary Elizabeth, the oldest, when she was eighteen and
he was twenty. They lived happily together until February 2, 1955, when
tradgedy struck their home and Mrs Horn lost her life when flames from an open
grate caught her dress on fire, causing her death.
The second marriage took place March 13 to Eunice Fike, now 61, the youngest
daughter of Joe Fike. The ceremony was performed at the home of the officiating
minister, Reverand Cole, near Old Landing at 3 PM in the presence of a few
intimate friends.
Editor's note: This wedding only lasted a few hours and both parties returned
to their individual abodes and never mentioned the matter again.

May. Chester Horn dies at the age of 65. Chester was a good and amiable sole
who never uttered a cross or discouraging word to anyone. He was highly
regarded by all that knew him. He lived on the Old Pike near his much beloved
Kentucky River; a stream that he was born on and lived near all of his life.
Fate exacted a heavy toll from Chester when of two of his small children were
killed in separate accidents.
