"Dick" Horn and Rebecca Horn I in Ross Creek KY. Known as
"Whistling Simp" for his proclivity whistling. Simp's resonant tunes
could be heard for long distances as he worked his fields or rode his horse
around Old Landing. In addition to becoming a successful farmer, he operated a
ferry, a blacksmith, a broom factory and a molasses plant.

Sunday, April 21. Clara Newton is born in Lee County to Raleigh Newton and
Mer-tie Ashcraft. Clara is a direct descendent of Daniel Boone. She was raised
in the old family log house on the Estill and Lee counties line just above
Crystal. She exemplifies the hearty stuff of her ancestors. She has has not
seen a doctor in nearly fifty years. When her husband, Buel, came down with
Alzhiemer's disease at an advanced age, she kept him home and took care of him
until he died and never complained once. She suffered the agony of losing a
young child in a tragic accident but continued to face life with a positive
attitude. She instilled that winning spirit in her three surviving sons who
have all achieved success and are well respected members of their communities.

Eliza-beth Fike in Estill Co KY Arnold is known for his pleasant and friendly
demeanor. He moved to Ohio but loved Old Landing so much that he returned to
the old home place. He first married Lennie McQuinn and they had five children.
Gertrude, Mary Ellen, Faye, and Sonny survived into adult-hood. Lennie and
their last child did not survive the birth ordeal. The surviving children were
raised by their grandparents, Simp and Mary Elizabeth Horn . Arnold mar-ried
Mertie Barker, a nurse from West Virginia, around 1945 and they produced three
children: Rodney, Merle and Brenda.

Theda Horn married Albert Henry
Earl Horn is born to Leonard Horn and Fannie B Fielder. Earl was a truck driver
for Bundy Tubing until he retired. Earl displayed the same stoic resolve that
had been so characteristic of his grandparents Clell and Viola Horn. He died
from emphysema and a brain aneurysm in 1995. Although suffering great
dis-comfort he never once complained about his fate during his long illness and
was always in good cheer.
Jan18. Bing Clark Horn is born to Homer Horn and Edith Witt. Bing worked for
IBM in Lexington. He died at a relatively young age in July of 1979.

Faye married #1 Lester Mayes and raised two sons. The Mayse family were

school in three states in a variety of teaching environments; including a one
room school in the mountains of Kentucky, Seminole Indians and Japanese.
Oct.2. Ralph LaVaughn Barnes is born to Ralph Barnes and Mertie B Horn. After
serving with the with the Army in Berlin and graduating from Eastern Kentucky
University, Ralph held management positions with the Corning Glass and Kroger
companies and later owned several restaurants and other retailing businesses in
Kentucky. In 1985 he became involved in prison reform and pioneered the concept
of building factories inside prisons to provide job training for inmates while
generating revenues to help pay the cost for operating the penal systems in the
states of Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi and Florida.

Melvin operated a service atation on River Drive in Irvine for many years.
Sept 2, Tracy Horn, son of Sidney Horn and Alfa Edwards, marries Mae Harrison
July 4 Elmer "Bear" Horn is found dead on the railroad tracks near
the mouth of Cow Creek. His head was severed from the body, apparently by a
train. There were no marks on his body leading to speculation that he was
murdered and placed on the tracks. Many people believe the persistant rumor
that he was killed by a local bootlegger and his body left on the track to
appear as an accident. No charges were ever brought in this case. His parents
parked his old Model T Ford near their house and it could be seen for many
years as it slowly disappeared under the silt from a nearby creek.

Monday, April 8. Buell Horn marries Clara Newton. Their children included: Dextral,
Jerry, Mitchell and Darrell. Mitchell died in an accident while still a child.
-----1941 WORLD WAR II BEGINS-
Many members of the Horn family served in the armed forces during the war. The
war brought an end to the Great Depression creating job opportunities in Ohio
and other industrial states. The greatest out migration of Horns since pioneer
times occurred as a result. Hundreds of Horn descendents settled in the Miami
River Valley in southern Ohio. Ironically the area had been visited by the
first Horns in Kentucky more than one hun-dred and fifty years earlier when
they were searching for Daniel Boone and his companions that were captured by
the Indians.

Clell was a farmer who lived at the base of Mt. Scratchum on the Cow Creek
side. Clell and Viola worked hard eking out a living but were always in good
spirits. Clell was a prankster who enjoyed joking with people of all ages. They
carried milk, eggs and butter to town in backpacks to earn spending money.
Viola's house was spartan but was always scrupulously clean and pleasent. Clell
and Viola represented the best in us and the world was a much better place
because of them.

Sun, Aug. 15. Phillipine Utah Dunaway, son of Sonora Horn and Charles Horn die
young in an automobile wreck. Utah and Charles were killed instantly when the
car that Utah was driving hit the embankment where Highway 82 intersects with
Highway 89 at Hargue.
Thur, Oct. 21. Winfred Puckett II is born to Winfred Puckett and Reva Horn
Saturday, Dec. 4. Mitchell Horn was killed at the age of 5 in Old Landing. A
sandbank collapsed and suffocated him while he and some other children were
playing on the riverbank near his grandfather Simp Horn's place. Mitchell was a
happy child who laughed a lot and was sorely missed.

Wednesday, Feb. 2. Mary Elizabeth Fike dies at the age of 70. Mary Elizabeth
suffered from Alzhiemer's and thought she saw a child in the fireplace and in
her efforts to pull the imagined child from the fire, caught her clothing on
fire and was fatally burned. She was the stabalizing force in Simp Horn's life
and any prosperity that the family enjoyed can be attributed to her hard work
and management skills. In addition to raising a large family of her own, she
was called upon to help raise several of her grandchildren and she accepted
that responsibility without com-plaint.
